Need soft but not sinking topper recommendation for princess & pea side sleeper

We got our new Engineered Sleep Duo Latex mattress a week ago. I knew it was going to be too firm for me as a lightweight side sleeper so I’d need to use a topper with it, but it’s even firmer than I expected and I’m having trouble finding a topper with enough cushioning to prevent pressure points. (My husband’s right on the edge of being a heavier sleeper and has lots of back problems along with preferring a firmer mattress, so I was trying to get a mattress that worked for him.) I am very sensitive to pressure points and don’t sleep well if there’s even the slightest pressure point.

I was using a cheap 2" memory foam topper with our old mattress (which I thought was firm but was definitely less firm than the new mattress). I tried that with the new mattress. The topper feels much less soft on the new mattress, and I’m getting pressure points along the sides of my thighs and increased shoulder pain because it’s not providing enough cushioning. But I also feel like my hips are sinking right down to the mattress and I’m having lots of ankle pain issues at night (which I think happens when my legs end up at a slight upward angle relative to my hips due to either mattress compression - in our old mattress - or my hips sinking in like they’re doing now). I was waking up every hour last night and tossing and turning in between wake-ups because my legs bothered me so much. Also the memory foam is hot which isn’t helping.

I don’t even know what to look for in a topper. I need something that won’t let my hips sink down, and I’ve got to have more cushioning than I’ve currently got. I’ve been looking at latex toppers but I’m afraid even the soft ones will have too much pushback and cause pressure points. I really don’t want to have to try several toppers to find one that works. I haven’t been sleeping well for months due to mattress issues and I’m kind of at my breaking point.

Hi Tarinya2.

Sorry to hear of you pressure point and topper woes.

A thicker memory foam topper could help here, or you could consider a soft Talalay latex topper as well. Latex as a rule “pushes back” a bit more, so you’re not progressively sinking into the foam as the night progresses, as is often the case with memory foam (which consequently causes that trapped heat/sleeping hot).

In your case, you may actually want to consider a shredded latex topper as opposed to a slab, as it’s something easy to adjust and won’t push back the same way a slab will. Something like this from Flobeds or this from Cozy Pure - unfortunately the return policy on products like these are usually restricted to unused items still in their original packaging.
