Hi I had two fusions within the year. Purchased a ProAdapt Medium Temperpedic after first fusion. I have found it to be not very supportive and wind up with pain as I feel I am sinking in it. I tried buying a Dozase medium firm topper. But that’s not working. I wake up with hip, back, and rib pain. So looking for advice for someone who has had chronic pain, is a back and side sleeper.
Hi Macasa10.
Welcome to our Mattress Forum. I’m going to tag @BackScience here to see what they make of your situation, as well.
Did you have back pain on your mattress(es) prior to your spinal fusions? Were they in the upper, mid, or lower back?

We’ll have had pain for 30 years. One surgery 30 years ago and now these two
I would happy to help provide some insight and recommendations. First, while higher density memory foam can be a wonderful pressure relieving material and the reason why Tempur-Pedic and our Tempflow brands have successfully helped many customers reduce pressure on their painful joints, it is not always supportive enough to provide enough back support and often it will lead to more hammocking of the lower spine and throw your body out of alignment. The right type of memory foam configuration that uses a more supportive combination of densities, can make the difference, but your Tempur-Pedic has too much sinking downward to allow for the support you need and adding a topper will only make the situation worse, since then your mid-section will further sink down and your overall spinal alignment will worsen.
That is why over the last 25 years or so, I have done testing with an App. I created called Mattress Checker to objectively look at spinal alignment that helped me better understand how spinal alignment can be improved, while still decreasing pressure and giving a high level of comfort for better sleep. It took many years of testing before I came up with the Back Science mattress.
Back Science(www.BackScience.com ) has a feel that is somewhere between latex and memory foam, but offers superior low back support, thanks to its patent pending Lumbar-Flex zoning and over 1000 count individually wrapped coils with Quantum Edge support. The Hypergel makes it extremely comfortable, but you still maintain a buoyancy to prevent your body from sinking too much into the mattress. Once you are much better supported, it should help prevent the pain you are experiencing.
I know you may not want to have to take a chance on a new mattress, but please note that the Back Science mattresses all come with a 365 Night comfort guarantee and in the event the mattress is somehow to firm or soft for either of your needs, we offer completely free customizations. So, you don’t have to just discard the mattress if it does not work the first time and it is a very easy thing for us to modify thanks to our GripLock modular cover system that uses a zipper to allow easy access to change the internal comfort and support layers when needed and it is also done through simple ground shipping right to your home. As far as durability goes, our Back Science Hybrid series mattresses all come with an industry leading 30-year limited warranty that kicks in with only ¾ of an inch of sag, as compared to the industry standard of 1.5 inches with most brands, which should give you far more assurance that it will stand the test of time.
I hope this helps, but feel free to write back if you have any other questions whatsoever or you can even call and speak with a sleep expert at the Back Science mattress company main number: 800-667-1969. If you do order a Back Science mattress, don’t forget to use the Mattress Underground member extra 10% off: TMU10.
