Old man with low moderate low back and hip pain after full hip replacement

Nine months after a right hip replacement, I have lumbar pain more prevalently on the right side and achy pain on my right thigh and buttocks, which could be due to femoral nerve irritation. I’ve been religiously doing PT but feel I’ve hit a wall and am now thinking of a replacement for my current Bear Pro Hybrid.
I’m a hot slide sleeper and weigh 165 pounds.

I’m at a loss as to where to look for a replacement and what materials might best suit my back. It seems that Latex is highly touted. I don’t have unlimited funds but willing to spend a decent amount for a great solution.

Thank you all for your comments in advance.

Hi Fairvalueadvisor,

Welcome to the Mattress UnderGround.

There are going to be a handful of mattresses that will offer the type of pressure relief you will crave due to your hip replacement. A supportive stable mattress with a balanced comfort layer will be ideal for you current situation.

Latex is often recommended for people with back pain because it offers good support and conforms to the body without excessive sinking. It’s also naturally breathable, which might be beneficial since you’re a hot sleeper.

A hybrid mattress as you are aware, combine coils with foam or latex layers. They often provide a good balance of support and comfort. Given your hot sleeping preference, some hybrids have cooling gel or breathable layers that could help regulate temperature.

You wont have to look far to see that TMU hosts many manufacturers that offer latex, latex hybrids, even synthetic hybrids that are high quality and do an excellent job of checking those pressure relief, personal preference issues and help you maintain posture and alignment.

Viscoelastic memory foam, while offering great pressure relieving characteristics, will generally sleep hot, may sink too much in its effort to provide pressure relief, it may make more sense to stick with latex, latex alternative, HD foams and foams, that sleep less hot, while still offering good pressure relief qualities.

Hopefully some of our wonderful latex folks will chime in, such as @Arizona_Premium, @Sleep_EZ, @DLX, @TheCleanBedroom, @EngineeredSleep as all have latex hybrid offerings.

On a personal note, my mother in law has had hip and knee replacement surgery. She is 86. I purchased a DLX premier hybrid. I ordered it with half firm and half medium comfort layer sides. She is about 5’3 175. Has the typical aging issues the folks face, and her experience may not be representative of what everyone might experience. Sleeping on the firm side of this mattress had significantly reduced her hip and knee pain to “no more complaining old woman minimum” if you know what I mean. I did add a yawnder4 adjustable base to help her get in and out of bed with the way the bed articulates and the lighted under bed, helps with late night travels to the restroom. The massage feature, although merely strong vibrations, has helped her greatly with her legs circulatory system.

Hopefully, with a bit of collaborating with one of the experts here at TMU or your local mattress boutique, you will find the same success that she has.

Hopefully, this gives you a little head start on materials and mattress types to point you in the right direction.

All the best,

Maverick

Thank you Maverick. It’s very kind of you to help.

Highly recommend latex foam for back problems. I’ll never get anything else.
