For context I am a 5ft1 100lbs female and partner is male 6ft 4 200lbs. I had a Beautyrest silver extra firm I loved ( have osteoporosis and need firm mattress) he had a medium nectar ( gave me terrible back pain and hated it myself) trying to find a middle ground mattress. Mattress firm salespeople pushed the plush Beautyrest pressure smart 11.75inches which I have seen bad reviews for. Got a king for 1,117 USD which is good deal but wondering if I should cancel it? Even though it says plush the salesman said it’s more of a medium feel. Looking for recommendations that won’t break the bank. I would prefer a back to basics coil firm mattress bit understand partner says it’s too firm. Have considered Costco because of affordable and return policy but also seen mixed reviews on durability. So overwhelmed and confused. We are hot sleepers mostly side and back. Please help! Thank you
Hello Sdelpozo
Welcome to our Mattress Forum.
Thank you for sharing your situation, you’re definitely not alone in analysis paralysis and trying to meet the needs of two very different sleeper preferences.
Given the significant differences in your preferences and body types, what may honestly work best for you both is a split configuration or side-by-side twin mattresses. This would allow each of you to choose the level of firmness and support that suits your individual needs without compromising. An example of this (while not a traditional innerspring) is the Sleep EZ mattress which seems to be close to your budget, and completely customizable.
While a good deal is always tempting, it’s important to focus on finding a mattress that’s supportive and comfortable for the long term. This has a much bigger impact on your sleep quality and overall health.
Costco can be a great option for affordability and their return policy, but in that case I’d probably point you to two twins that meet your needs (maybe firm and soft versions of the same model so they don’t differ in height).

To add to Nikki’s recommendation, I would also add that I would not want you to end up in the same place as you started with, so I would like to offer a solution that should work very well for your two body types, in addition to offering you both the necessary firmness to avoid the back issues you experienced prior, since any mattress that is softer than what your body type will allow for, certainly poses the risk of not supporting you properly. Too firm on the other hand and you are correct that it can cause pressure points in the hips and shoulders. It is definitely something that I have seen quite frequently over the 20+ years I have been designing mattresses and one that really feel like I have solved for many customers. Hybrids can be the best mattress to address the low back, while still reducing pressure in the shoulders and middle to upper spine, but not all are created equal. As a Doctor of Chiropractic, I have always wanted to ensure that any mattress I design will offer pressure relief and to do that properly, the mattress has to contour your body. Unfortunately, most of the time that leads to a hammocking of the low back and hips, since that is the heaviest area of most individuals.
With the Back Science mattress, I helped create a special interlocking specially zoned Lumbar-Flex support and I have been able to test and verify that it really does work to produce the most optimal alignment thanks to hundreds of customers that I have measured using the Mattress Checker sleep posture App. In your case, I would recommend the Back Science Essentials, which is close to $1000, so it won’t strain the budget, but it does have all the traits that suit what you are looking for, with a more luxury firmness that will support the back, while offering full contouring and comfort for the shoulders and hips.
Either way, please note that while a recent survey we had Trust Pilot run found that 97% of our Back Science mattress customers felt that the Back Science mattress reduced their back pain, we also have 365 Night comfort guarantee, with completely free customizations. So, you don’t have to just discard the mattress if it does not work the first time and those comfort or firmness adjustments usually work perfectly when needed. I hope that helps, but feel free to let me know if you have any additional questions whatsoever and if you do purchase, be sure to use the TMU10 discount to save an additional 10 percent as a Mattress Underground member.
