Overwhelmed and desperate. Help?

I’ve read and read and researched and researched and I’m completely overwhelmed with the information, so I’m hoping for some more specific guidance with our current situation. We have a tempurpedic. I don’t recall which version, as it was gifted to us (new) directly from the company as part of a big Make A Wish gift for my daughter’s wish. It’s only about 2.5 years old. It’s very firm. My husband and myself are both side sleepers and we are both dealing with back, hip, and shoulder pain. Moreso myself than him however. It actually hurts in all the classic pressure points just laying on it. We tried to top it with a memory foam topper. That did help, however created the feeling of being in a “hole” and it was difficult to turn over or even get up, and it began to feel like we were wrestling with it all night. So we removed it and have gone back to just the mattress alone and I’m looking for another solution. Even our sofa is less painful as far as pressure points go, than the bed. The mattress is structurally just fine. Perfectly level and no soft spots or wear. So, it seems a topper is the way to go. We absolutely can not afford a completely new mattress. We have both slept on a latex mattress and loved it. I also have latex pillows, and have only used them for years. So I’m now looking into latex toppers, hoping to gain pressure relief without so much of the feeling of being trapped in a hole once it sinks in. I’m just not sure exactly what I need to go for, and was hoping for confirmation that this is a good avenue to explore.
So to summarize, our memory foam mattress is in great shape structurally, but is far too firm for us. We are side sleepers. I am unfortunately quite over weight at 200+. My husband is tall with a little above average weight for his frame, at 6’2 and around 190-195. We are looking at latex toppers to add softness and pressure point relief. Because of our larger frames, it seems that possibly a 3 inch is where we need to look? Should we go straight to one rated Soft? Or would a 2 inch Soft still have the possibility of providing us with sufficient relief, given the price difference is significant across most brands and we are already pushing it as far as budget goes? We have medically fragile kids and sleep is at a premium as it is, and we are desperately trying to make what little sleep we get pain free and restful.

Thank you in advance for any help/suggestions.

Hello Menfusse

Thank you for your inquiry! In most cases when dealing with pressure point issues on a mattress that is too firm, simply adding a topper can do the trick. However this can be a tricky proposition at times because a topper can make a somewhat firm sleep surface significantly softer, which can take you from having pressure points to having back aches instead. You need to be careful to not go too soft with your topper.

Based on the information you kindly provided, I would recommend starting with a 3" medium (30-32ILD) topper. At both your weights, this would be the best starting point for adding contour to your mattress. A softer topper will most likely be much too soft to provide adequate contour without bottoming out. If this happens, you may not relieve your pressure points at all.

I recommend ordering from a company that offers an exchange/return policy for toppers. SleepEZ offers a 30-day exchange and return policy. This means that if your topper is either too soft or too firm, you can exchange it one time within 30 days of your initial purchase. If it does not ultimately workout, you can return it at the cost of shipping.

Thanks again, and good luck! Please feel free to keep us posted!
