Spouse and I (40’s) are upgrading from a Queen to a King and replacing our 10 year old DIY mattress (9" blended talalay from Brooklyn - 3" soft 19ILD over 3" medium 24ILD over 3" firm 36ILD). We have been switching up the soft and medium layers because it is starting to get uncomfortable most likely due to our age but I’ll blame the mattresses age, and prefer the medium over soft.
We tried out the Naturepedic EOS Pillowtop locally and it was great. We were surprised the Naturepedics felt so nice but I think the give of the springs contributed the most and the extra layer of latex compared to the non-Pillow top was great. We thought the firm coils medium latex, soft latex was too soft. And the firm coils, firm latex, firm latex was too firm, but both were not overly so, so I’m hoping to land in the middle but leaning firmer. The combo of the coils and two 3" layers of latex provided a great depth compared to our 9". We are 150lbs and 220lbs back/side with a little stomach sleepers. The build I’m considering is:
1" firm foam foam by mail
8" TPS 15.5 coils
3" Sleep on Latex Dunlop Medium 34ILD (considered firm by ILD standards)
3" Arizona Premium Mattress Natural Talalay Medium 25-29ILD
Mattress Cover is undecided, but would like to wait to see if it feels soft/firm as is, then order
Thin Wool Mattress Pad - We have the St Dormier from FloBeds and it has been great.
Any suggestions?
Not knowing the ILD of the Naturepedic dunlop latex has me most concerned. Then not knowing how the TPS coils compare to the firm coils of Naturepedic. Is a 34ILD over the springs going to allow the springs to do their thing?
I’m expecting the motion isolation will be a little worse than what we have now, but hopefully with the bigger bed, it’ll be a wash. I’d consider going to 2" on one of the layers and even consider the microcoils from TPS too, but I haven’t seen a comparison of ILDs.
I’ll make sure to post what we end up with since I see how helpful it is when looking back at so many posts.

Hi Otter4044,
You probably know this already, but part of the ‘give’ you felt with the Naturepedic pillowtop springs is because they are individually pocketed. Is your DIY Individually pocketed coils? Pocketed coils have less motion transfer, and of course looking at the coil count is important, because the more coils, the more they can adjust to you.
I didn’t see a spec for the mattress encasement - will you be encasing the layers or just using the pad? An encasement will help with shifting and ultimately help things last longer and hold together.
Best of luck with your build!

Howdy,
Yes, the TPS (Texas Pocket Springs) coils are pocketed. We will be encasing the layers in a mattress cover but not sure if I want to go with a quilted cover or stretch cover (assuming a quilted cover may make it a little firmer) and making sure we end up with the right size if there are any adjustments.
Considering the Naturepedic pillow top has a cotton cover over each latex layer, a layer underneath the pillow top and I’m sure other batting/etc, I am surprised the firm doesn’t feel firmer, but they could be using a lower ILD Dunlop latex to offset so who knows.
Ordered the 1" Lux HQ FBM, 8" TPS Two Twin XL15.5 coils, and the Wool Room Deluxe Mattress Pad to accommodate the thicker mattress.
Still can’t pull the trigger on the latex. Wondering if all of the layers (including the coils) are too close to the same ILD. I haven’t seen many medium hybrid setups with two layers of latex.

I’d be curious to see what you’d recommend from your offerings given what we’ve been sleeping on and the naturepedic eos pillow tops we’ve tried.
Our springs arrived super fast so we were able to try our old blended Talalay layers out on top of the springs so we ordered soft natural Talalay 19ild over medium natural Talalay 28ild and a cover. Will post the specifics after the bed frame comes in and try it all out together.

Any updates? Trying to decide something similar. I have the 15G TPS also.
