I recently bought a California King Sealy Optimum - I’m a tall guy and the four extra inches are an important feature. The mattress happily arrives and looking at it I can tell its too short- measuring it like a normal person with a tape measure I find it to be only an inch longer than a king. After many conversations with the retail outlet and measuring every bed in the showcase and sales rep visit to the manufacturer- there apparently is a new way to measure a bed. I’m intrigued as to how three inches will magically appear. Clearly it’s a cost cutting scam- save material and make more beds. I don’t have a happy ending yet.
Is this an issue everywhere with these latex/ gel beds or just Sealy?
Hi Nichoda,
This is the first I’ve heard of a “new way to measure” and it certainly doesn’t seem “normal” to me. How are thy suggesting you measure it?
A California King should measure 84" from one end to the other (the distance between two vertical rulers placed against the sides of the bed). While I can see an inch variance as being normal … 3" is not IMO.
What does your mattress measure?

I have a call scheduled with the Ohio based factory rep to explain the apparent changes in measurement - via tape measure the Optimum’s measurements are 81 1/8 inches by 71 1/8 inches. I can understand getting the width within an inch but the length is unacceptable.
Hi Nichoda,
Well you certainly have me curious.
Did you measure in between straight edges placed on the sides of the mattress or along the top (where the fabric may be tight and be pulling in the edges of the mattress)?
I’m looking forward to hearing what the Sealy rep says. It’s interesting too that the listed specs of the Optimum are what they are supposed to be (72 x 84) even though that doesn’t seem to be what you received.
