Seeking replacement for sinking Purple mattress

My husband and I are looking to replace our current mattress. In 2021 we purchased a
Purple 3 Hybrid Premier Mattress. At first we loved it, but the past year or so the grid has begun to collapse. We’ve roated it semi-annually. We have both been encountering increased back aches.

We both suffer from back pain and that is a big part of the reason we made the switch from our original Brooklyn Bedding Latex mattress. (Plus we didn’t like how it retained heat)

My husband and I are on the big side, 220lbs, and 275… we are both back/side sleepers. But i honestly think we just toss and turn due to being so uncomfortable.

We just got back from a 3 week cruise on Celebrity. We had the best sleep and neither of us felt any pain! Since we’ve been home, were both feeling sore again. My limited research shows the cruise line uses a firmer type of bed called Celebrity Cashmere™ Mattress???

I am hesitant to buy this online, and would prefer to try something in store if possible. We’re in the Phoenix, Arizona area.

I also have terrible allergies and asthma, so something hypoallergenic would be best. I am at a loss at what we should do. We have a king size single adjustable base. I really wasnt expecting to have to make another huge purchase so soon. Any and all suggestions are welcomed. Thank you!

Hi Christyhomebills,

Welcome to the Mattress UnderGround!

I completely understand how frustrating it can be to deal with back pain, especially as plus-size (I am 6’ 220, formerly 250+) individuals where support in a mattress is crucial.

Your experience with the Purple mattress doesn’t surprise me. Many modern mattresses use innovative technologies, but not all hold up well over time. Here’s a video that illustrates some concerns with the Purple mattress: Example 1 and Example 2.

As for the Celebrity Cruise mattress, it seems like you may be referring to this model: Cashmere Mattress. One notable feature is the foam-encased perimeter support around the coils, which can impact overall stability. You can learn more about edge support options here: Edge Support Video.

It’s common for destination mattresses, like those on cruise ships, hotels or destination residences to have a universal firmness level (often around 7/10). This is designed to accommodate a wide range of sleepers. Many people return home, excited to replicate that comfort, only to find that their initial euphoric experience fades into oblivion after a few months. Plus, most of these proprietary made for vacation resorts, tend to offer no trial or return policy to speak of.

While you’ve had a challenging experience with latex, don’t completely rule it out. If you have decided latex is not the feel or comfort you prefer there are plenty of alternatives in your price range, many of which offer trial periods for exchanges if they don’t meet your expectations. Working with a mattress professional who specializes in plus-size sleepers can significantly enhance your chances of finding the right fit for restful nights.

Consider looking into trusted manufacturers like @EngineeredSleep, @DLX, or other manufacturers such as Custom Comfort, Shifman, and Millbrook (a British-made option). These brands often provide mattresses that can deliver the comfort you experienced on your cruise, with durability that lasts 20 years or more. Keep in mind that many destination mattresses are rotated out after about 5 years, as they’re designed for shorter-term use.

While it’s certainly valuable to test a mattress before buying, I want to emphasize that a 30-minute trial in a store may not provide a complete picture of long-term comfort. True comfort often reveals itself after a few months of sleep. Testing can help eliminate mattresses that are immediately too soft and determine if the feel aligns with your preferences when you first lie down.

That said, I wouldn’t completely dismiss the idea of purchasing a mattress online, especially if you’ve consulted with a knowledgeable professional at the retailer you plan to buy from. Many smaller independent mattress sellers have a strong incentive to ensure you find the right fit on the first try. It’s in everyone’s best interest to avoid unnecessary and costly exchanges, particularly for the retailer who aims to accommodate your needs.

Best of luck in your search, and feel free to reach out if you have more questions!

Hi @Christyhomebills - so sorry you are having to be back on the search for a mattress! Not a fun journey. Hopefully us or someone here can help make the decision easy for you.

For Engineered Sleep I have 2 recommendations for you and the price points are very different - to give you options. Both are great mattresses and should fit your needs.

Top Option: Duo Memory
Black Friday Price (starts 10/19) + TMU10 Code would get you these prices:
Queen: $1,259.37
King: $1,637.37
This mattress has a 100 Night Trial and it also has a Comfort Exchange during the 100 Night Trial. The 2-piece DUO design is very key here. Easy to replace comfort layers when they wear out.

Second Option: Today Mattress
Queen: $479.20
King: $559.20
Obviously a big difference in price point, but still a comfortable and supportive mattress in that 7/10 firmness range. This also has a 100 Night Trial.

I know you probably have specific questions, concerns. Feel free to message me here on TMU or call or text me at 864-630-5206.

Hello christyhomebills,

You’ve received much good advice from @Maverick. What caught my eye about your post is this: “I also have terrible allergies and asthma, so something hypoallergenic would be best.” Natural materials like wool and latex can be dust-mite resistant and tend to be hypoallergenic (except for the few people who are allergic to latex). If you are not allergic to wool or latex, I’d encourage you to give our mattresses a look.

With all natural materials, you are much less likely to have an allergic reaction, and find the support you need. Most of our mattresses are customizable and often you can swap out a layer after purchase if it doesn’t work for you, depending on the model. Because of the quality of the materials, we seldom, if ever, get complaints about the mattress collapsing in the way you mentioned.

With all natural materials, the price point is higher, but we do often have sales and don’t forget that you have a TMU discount if you look on our profile page. We aim to get our customers the best price possible.

Our mattress page has latex, hybrid, and innerspring models. Be sure to drill down as we have a variety of price points.
If you have questions, give us a call or post them here. We’re here to help!
