Shopping for a for two side-sleepers, 290lb + 110lb, questions about pricing

I’ve had about 100 tabs on 5 different mattress manufacturers and these forums open for a few days and my brain is starting to melt. But at this point I’m pretty interested in SleepEZ, and a 100% latex mattress.

I live somewhere very rural and my options for trying mattresses are limited. One store here carried some combination latex+other foam mattresses from Restonic, so I at least got to lay on them. Currently I’m sleeping on a 9 year old budget Serta spring mattress and honestly sleep just fine on it, and have no back/neck/shoulder issues in general, so it’s not like I have some very specific needs. And my girlfriend seems to find literally every mattress comfortable, so I don’t think having split firmness is something we’d actually want despite the huge weight difference.

I do like having a very soft, conforming top layer, especially since my shoulders are super broad, and I’m a side-sleeper. But I’m not sure if Extra firm, firm, soft would be durable/supportive enough for me at 290lbs. Especially with two people on it for 400lb total.

I also have some pricing questions. I’m not trying to “game the system” or anything, but there were a few things that I noticed while pricing so many different mattresses that confused me quite a bit.

When customizing a complete mattress on the site, selecting dunlop vs talalay for any of the layers doesn’t change the price at all. Going from a 9" queen mattress to a 10" mattress increases one layer of latex by 1", but adds $252 to the price. The cost difference between a 2" and 3" queen talalay topper is $76.

The difference between a 7" queen mattress, with 2x3" latex layers, and a 10" which adds another 3 inch layer is $456, but a 3" queen size latex topper is $240.

Even pricing out the whole mattress as separate parts, with all 3 layers being a 3" talalay topper… it’s still cheaper than a 10 inch mattress with 3x3" layers, and only one being talalay.

Am I missing something about the difference between the layers in a complete mattress on the site, and the latex toppers?

Hello Kai27,
Thank you so much for the inquiry! At 290 pounds there’s a really good chance that you bottom out on the 3" soft layer and sink right down to the firm and extra firm layers. I think the best choice would be to get a medium top layer and get it with our 4-way stretch cover which would allow you to contour into the latex better, making for a much plusher feel that will accommodate your broader shoulders.
Regarding our pricing, toppers aren’t eligible for exchange and don’t carry any warranty, so the price for a raw layer isn’t the same as that same layer in our mattress. Please also note that, when you order a Select Sleep mattress, the price doesn’t change no matter how many layers are Talalay and how many are Dunlop, whereas the price for a Talalay layer by itself is more expensive than a Dunlop layer by itself. Lastly, buying raw layers & components to make a mattress is definitely less expensive, but mattress components have no warranty, no exchange policy, only a 30 day return period, and the return would be at the actual cost of shipping instead of just $99.

So it is possible to order, say, a 10 inch select sleep mattress, but get it with a 6 inch depth mattress cover, and a separate topper cover instead of a 9 inch depth mattress cover? And still have all the parts covered under the normal mattress warranty rather than the warranty that applies to separate toppers?

Yes definitely! Just order the 10" mattress and mention in the “comments” section at checkout that you want the mattress to be a 7" mattress with 3" topper. There would be no price difference for this, and the warranty and exchange policy would remain unchanged.

Mostly just updating this thread for people doing research by looking at other people’s questions and purchase choices (which is what helped me a lot).

I ended up going with a 10 inch SleepEZ mattress and an adjustable base. I spent way too long going through all the different combinations of complete mattresses, or individual layers from all of the online latex sellers listed here. Comparing prices, warranties, return/exchange options, etc. etc.

Since all of these beds are pretty much identical in terms of the actual latex, it really comes down to all the other factors.

For me, the biggest factors were the free shipping, white glove delivery on the adjustable base, and since I actually would have been purchasing pillows and a mattress protector if they weren’t included, I considered the fact that those were included with the mattress as paying less for the mattress (versus just some freebies that are nice, but I wouldn’t have bought on my own).

Hello Kai27,

Thank you so much for the order and thanks for the update as well! I’m glad we were able to help you make an informed decision, and please remember that the mattress you’re getting is typically a 20 year mattress, so if anything comes up over the next 20 years please just let us know!
