Hi, I recently made an order on Sleeping Organic (after ordering a Zenhaven and canceling after finding out about Sleeping Organic on this forum). I wanted to replicate the Zenhaven which I know has 2 sides (“Plush Luxury”, and “Medium Firm”). Zenhaven is 100% Talalay so I wanted to keep it that way for the Sleeping Organic.
I saw that they had a major sale which is ending soon so I ended up calling to order and replicating the mattress on the phone. Ended up buying the 4 layer mattress (Xtra Soft, Soft, Medium Firm, and Firm) along with an adjustable base and got a nice discount off of both. The 4 layer I bought was 3 inches per layer whereas the Zenhaven uses 1.5 inches for the comfort layer on each side, and 3 inches for the 2 support layers in the middle (using ILDs to convert Zenhaven to Sleeping Organic, we got to XS, S, MF, F as the construction).
I was told that the Sleeping Organic mattress isn’t flippable, so to replicate the Luxury Plush / Medium Firm sides of the Zenhaven I would have to re-arrange the layers myself.
I am wondering, was I correct to do it this way in order to get the something similar to Zenhaven? (I know it’s not perfect because of the difference in thickness of layer)? I just felt like I was getting a slightly better deal because even though the one I ordered was slightly more expensive, I have an extra 3 inches of foam on the Zenhaven (12 vs 9).
I am a back sleeper so I prefer firmer vs softer as well. Did I order too many layers here and would less have sufficed?
Thank you for your inquiry. I apologize, however without knowing the ILD’s for all layers involved from both companies, I am not able to offer you an accurate opinion as to whether or not the Sleeping Organic mattress will feel anything like the Zenhaven. I recommend calling both companies to find out what the ILD’s (densities) for all layers in both mattresses. While you have them on the phone, get their feedback as to whether or not the mattresses will or should feel similar. If you are at least able to get the ILD’s for each layer, I will be happy to give my opinion as to how they compare comfort-wise.
If you can convert N* values to ILD, ZenHaven specifies their flip-able mattress as follows, offering either Gentle Firm or Luxury Plush support sides: SUPPORT SYSTEM
NATURAL LATEX GENTLE FIRM COMFORT LAYER 1.5" layer of 5-zone variable-density, Gentle Firm, 100% Talalay latex (N2)
NATURAL LATEX FIRM BASE LAYER 3" layer of 100% Talalay latex (N4)
NATURAL LATEX PLUSH BASE LAYER 3" layer of 100% Talalay latex (N3)
NATURAL LATEX LUXURY PLUSH COMFORT LAYER 1.5" layer of 5-zone, variable-density, luxury-plush, 100% Talalay latex (N1) QUILT PACKAGE
ORGANIC TICKING Organic cotton circular knit top panel
NATURAL FLAME-RETARDANT LAYER A 1" layer made from a blend of 100% organic New Zealand wool, with non-toxic materials to keep the layer from shifting
LABEL Sewn-on custom embroidered label
Looking at Sleeping Organic for densities, they specify their Talalay densities as:
Talalay Extra Soft 14-18
Talalay Soft 19-23
Talalay Medium 24-28
Talalay Firm 32-35
Hecate apparently ordered 4 layers of 3" Talalay in the progressive configuration: Xtra Soft, Soft, Medium Firm, and Firm.
Zenhaven lets you flip the mattress so that the 20-24 can be on top alternatively.
Thanks again for the help. I ordered a Reverie 9T which fits with a platform base (will remove rails so it fits in the frame) and excited for the combo but still very wondering how comparable my Sleeping Organic purchase will be to a Zenhaven (I do have 3 more inches of talalay, 1.5 more on the each of the extra soft and medium firm.
I would also like to add that Sleeping Organics layers are re-arrrangeable. I’m thinking of mimicking the luxury plush setup first (extra soft, medium firm, firm, soft).
The layers you have chosen have a nice, graduated approach to support from the top comfort layers. Extra soft is exactly that, extra soft, meaning that you sink right through that layer to gradually feel the other layers. That feel may be exactly what you what. Firmer layers don’t cradle you as much and lift you up more than the soft ones do, so you often need less of them before you feel the slats. For the amount of soft layers you have in your mattress, you will probably appreciate a 12" depth instead of 9". I consider all top three layers to be soft, compared to the other firmness options in latex.
Thank you for your insight. So you would recommend that order from soft on top to the firm on the bottom. Would there be any other re-arrangement that you would suggest if I prefer something firmer? I haven’t gotten the bed yet but looking forward to it.
Thank you Hecate! For posting the “N"s of the latex in the Zenhaven. I think I finally see why it’s not quite working for me. I am sleeping on the “Luxury Plush” side and there’s not enough transition from the lightweight latex (N1) to the firmer (N3) latex…even with an extra 1.5” N1 topper. I too am looking at a build with SO and this helps a lot!
So I received my Sleeping Organic mattress a few days ago and assembled it yesterday (it is quite tall, 4 * 3inch layers plus the cover, and a mattress protector which I got from the person on the phone when I called in to order). It is quite comfortable and soft (I did firm, medium, soft, extra soft, in that order from bottom to top), but also bouncy. I prefer a bit firmer, so I may try the firmer layer higher or get a firm latex layer for the top.
I will sleep on this for a few more days + see how it works with the adjustable base when it comes.
I have a Zenhaven, still in trial, that I may return for a Sleep EZ.
In my opinion, based on the info you gave, you made a good decision.
The new mattress gives you much more flexibility to dial in various preferences. I agree that one issue with the Zenhaven, for some sleepers, is that the upper comfort layer is only 1.5" thick.
