Sleeptek Mattress Cover Replacement

I have an 8" natural rubber mattress which I purchased from Sleeptex (now Obasan) in 2014. I stupidly put the zippered cover in the washing machine and the wool shrank when wet and no longer fits.

I reached out to Obasan and they gave me a quote of $960 for a replacement cover. Thanks to this forum, I’ve found that there are some other options out there that are significantly cheaper and that come in an 8" depth.

  1. The SleepEZ Cotton & Wool Zippered Mattress Cover
  2. The Latex Mattress Factory Natural Quilted Cover
  3. DIY Mattress.net Zippered Mattress Cover in Organic Cotton
  4. APM Organic Cotton Zippered Mattress Cover

Anyone have any thoughts on one of these versus another? Do you know which will be most similar to my original Sleeptek cover (which I loved)? Or any others that I’m missing that fit the bill?

None of the companies seem to accept returns / exchanges on mattress covers so I’m hoping for some advice before buying.

Hi SK21, welcome to The Mattress Underground -
Glad to have you here

Sorry to hear of the misfortune with your SleepTek wool cover. The shrinkability of wool material in mattress covers requires extreme care in washing and adhering to the manufacturers instructions, as you have found.

You seem to be on the right track and it’s good to see you already did a great deal of research. Since you are replacing an 8-year-old Sleeptek cover, it may be difficult for anyone that did not have direct experience with both covers to say how similar they may be to any given new organic cotton/wool cover. It looks like you have the (8") Arcadia 2.0 and for comparison this is what Obasan listed on their website in 2014: “Organic Cotton Jersey covers are quilted with 900g of soft, pure organic wool, which reduces pressure points and sleeps cool” … // … “All Obasan wool batting used in our mattresses, organic pillows, and organic comforters / duvets and wool fill is organic and pure. The wool comes from a family business in Argentina where sheep graze on land that has never been used for agriculture, ensuring that it is free from pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic fertilizers”

I agree $960 is a fairly high price for a zippered cover, though it appears they are not for general sale as an accessory Most companies will not accept returns of used or even opened covers, sheets, or pillows so it’s a good idea to ensure as much as possible that the cover you are considering is similar to the old one and call the companies you listed and provide them with the cover specs listed above.

All the choices for replacement you have found are of high quality, with good materials and construction from Trusted Members of The Mattress Underground, all of which compete well with the best in the industry, are transparent about the materials they use, and would be happy to help and answer any questions. I looked a bit of the wool cover from Arizona SleepEz Factory , which is organic cotton & Joma wool and zippered that’s available in 6",8", 9" and 12", and they are all on sale right now. They also have a dedicated forum here so you may want to ask them to help in matching the specs of your old SleepTek cover to a new one.

The Quilted covers from DIY Mattress are available in thicknesses of 6" to 12". Trusted member Latex Mattress Factory has an organic cotton and Joma wool here cover available in 6",8",9" and 12" and a dedicated forum page here as well. Trusted member Arizona Premium Mattress has a number of replacement mattress covers and a dedicated forum page here. All of these are about half, or less, than the cost of the Obasan replacement depending on specifications.

Most of the Trusted members of the site would be familiar with the Obasan so it won’t be too difficult to give you an informed opinion of how similar these covers are.

Thank you so much Basilio! Other than the amount of wool used in the cover (900g), are there other specs I should ask about to be able to compare?

Also, I don’t believe my bed is the Acadia since it’s two pieces of 6" rubber (one per person) with a 2" topper, but I imagine the covers wouldn’t have changed much over time?

Hi SK21,

Most of the mattress models from SleepTek from around that time should use basically the same cover. When you call the manufacturer, provide the dimensions of your current bed, and ask if they can match the Sleeptek/Obasan cover. They should be familiar with the brand and will let you know what options are available.
