I’m pretty sure I’m going with something from Sleep on Latex. I sleep primarily on my back, rarely (like maybe a few hours a month) may end up on my side. 5’5” 135 pounds.
Coming from a 20yr old Tempurpedic, I don’t know exactly what model it was but had two base layers and two memory foam layers. I liked it a lot but over the last few years it definitely started to break down.
I know everyone says the SoL firm is way too firm. Given the fact that I’m not heavy, should I avoid the Firm and go medium? I probably will end up with some sort of topper but wanted to start with a good base. Obviously don’t want something that’s too soft and can’t firm up.
I chatted with SoL customer support and they suggested Firm, but I’m just concerned that I may not be heavy enough and may just feel way to firm.
SoL customer service is pretty reliable, so if your conversation led you there, they may be correct. The only issue is, if they are not correct.
Them the entire mattress goes back.
Folks like @Sleep_EZ or @Arizona_Premium use the same kind of dunlop or you can incorporate talalay in the combination, and either can guide you through the zippered mattress process whereby if it us not quite right, you can rearrange or swap a layer to pinpoint comfort.
As a back sleeper you definitely want a mattress that is firm enough to prevent hammocking. But how firm and the bit of contouring and pressure relief may be key to your overall comfort.
This just expands the options you would have. All three are great options, but you may want some options at 135lbs, if firm is to much for you.
I tend to lean firm as foams, even latex will soften a tad over time. But having flexibility may offer the best option.
I ended up going with SoL firm. I reached out to Arizona a few times, left a message on their text/chat but didn’t get a response so moved on. I’ve had the Sleep on Latex for about 3 weeks now.
The SoL Firm is definitely firm. It’s honestly great for my lower back, no issues there at all. After about 5-6hrs of sleep I notice pain in my mid-back/lower rib area. Pain is more on the sides vs spine. It feels more like muscle fatigue and tightness resulting in a tightening of the rib cage and more effort to take very deep breaths. After a few minutes of walking about and light stretching it subsides.
I’m going to get a topper, curious what thoughts are around this type of pain. Being relatively light weight and sleeping on my back (and never feeling this on our previous 20y/o tempurpedic which was much softer), I wouldn’t think this would be a pressure area. I don’t want to go too soft and lose what I like about the firmness for my lower back.
Does it make sense to go with a medium SoL topper (maybe 2”) since they’ll give a discount on the topper to dial in the mattress, or look elsewhere for a Talalay in medium?
Really curious on thoughts around the side/rib pain as I wasn’t expecting this.
Yes a medium or a medium-soft 2" topper should be enough to fill in the gaps that are likely causing the mild strain on your back. You also have to remember, you are coming off a viscoelastic memory foam mattress, which as heat transferred from your body, the foam got soft and very conforming (the positive benefit of ve foam). Of course there are other issues that VE foam causes, but the main point is, you are still adjusting to the new mattress, which has push back and and firmness.
The topper will be an immediate fix, although as a back sleeper, you might need some more time adjusting to the different material and its characteristics. Regardless, the topper will make an initial impact.
