Stuck with a warranty at Sleep Country (Canada)

Hello! I am stuck with an 8 year warranty at Sleep Country. I need to choose a new mattress or just receive the equivalent of what I have in a new version (mine (S brand) has body impressions after only 2 years). I did research and with all I have learned now it is very hard to find anything decent there, main problem is I can’t get any information about the components of any mattresses. I see my alternative as being:
1-to buy elsewhere but loose about 1000$
2-get the equivalent and deal with a similar situation in a couple years (not a fan of this idea since throwing away such a big item is really bad for the environment).
3-was thinking maybe buying a quality latex topper to put on top to extend the life of tne new S brand mattress. Is that a good idea?
4-Any other ideas for me?
Thank you for your help!
Stéphanie

Hi Stephanie and welcome to the forums! Have you put the mattress on the floor by itself to make sure it’s the mattress that has the problem and not the foundation?

Regarding your topper idea, normally neither a firm nor extra firm topper will help beyond a negligible degree, even if you purchased a 3” extra firm Dunlop topper. Support has to come from the mattress, not from the topper. Also, latex will conform to whatever surface it is on, so if your mattress is soft or sagging the topper will take on the characteristics of your mattress. Lastly, having a top layer that is not encased with the rest of the mattress will allow that top layer enough spatial freedom to move upwards when you lay on it, making for a very plush and enveloping feel, even if it’s an extra firm layer. About 75% of the customers that purchase a firm topper to make the mattress firmer end up returning it, that’s the only reason I mention these things. If you want to try it though, an extra firm 3" Dunlop topper has the best chance of working for you. If you get a 3” extra firm topper and find that it doesn’t work for you, you could either return it within 30 days for a flat-rate $45 return fee, or you can use it to build an all-latex mattress by using it as the bottom layer of a do-it-yourself mattress.

The only effective advice I have (and I know it’s not ideal) to “fix” a mattress that’s too soft or sagging is to flip the mattress over to the side that isn’t meant to be slept on, see if it’s flat, and add a topper to make it softer (I’m assuming the other side will be too firm, but don’t know for sure, of course).

Hello! Thank you for your quick answer. To give you a bit more context; we have looked at buying something different and even upgrading budget wise by buying a different mattress from Sleep Country. Although, since we are unable to get the technicalities about the materials used in the mattresses we are interested in, i found myself played and stuck with this company and does not want to invest more. So came the idea of putting the topper on top of the NEW mattress Sleep Country wants to replace our saggy mattress with (Sealy optimum grand era) . We would buy the topper from a more trustworthy company and not invest a cent more at Sleep Country. So the question is more: would it possibly extend the life of the new mattress to prevent a future sagging situation while improving the quality and comfort of the new mattress? Thanks for your help!

Oh OK, sorry for the confusion on my end! Yes, a topper will extend the longevity of the mattress, for sure! I normally recommend laying or sleeping on the mattress first so you can make the right choice on the topper thickness and firmness. Aside from that, I’m only familiar with latex and latex toppers, so I’m not trying to push latex on you by any means, but I’d like to give you our advice on how to choose the right latex topper, in case you end up going that direction with the topper.

Please keep the following in mind when choosing a thickness for your topper: A 2” topper will make a noticeable difference but, depending on how much you want to change the feel of your mattress, may still leave something to be desired. The 3” topper will change the feel of your mattress the most, and if that’s the change that you’re looking for then this would be the best bet. The best way to summarize it would be to say that a 2” topper will make the mattress feel moderately softer and the 3” topper will make the mattress feel much softer.

Both the thickness and the density makes a difference when choosing a topper. Ultimately, how you make your decision will depend on the following: how firm your mattress is now; how much softer you want your mattress to be; your height, body weight, and sleeping preference (For example, if you weigh more than about 200 lbs I would recommend a medium topper; if you weighed more than 200 lbs and bought a soft topper, you would likely bottom out and sink right through the topper to the firm mattress that you’re trying to move away from). We normally recommend soft for folks under 200 pounds, medium for folks between 200 and 250 pounds, and firm for folks over 250 pounds. Even though we call it a “firm” topper, it will actually feel quite soft to anyone over 250 pounds, just FYI.

Aside from that, Talalay latex is bouncier and springier and is generally better at contour and pressure relief on your hips and shoulders. Dunlop latex is denser and firmer and is generally better at support and maintaining proper spinal alignment so Talalay is much more common for toppers. Talalay can also be helpful in avoiding back pain because it provides more of what we call secondary support. Secondary support fills in the gaps between your body and the mattress. For side sleepers, this is normally the area between a person’s ribs and waist. For back sleepers, this is normally the area between the small of your back and the mattress. If these parts or your body aren’t being held up by the mattress, your muscles will work all night to hold those parts of your body up, which can lead to back pain. So Talalay is much more common for toppers because of the extra pressure relief and secondary support it offers.

Beware of the sunk cost fallacy. Go with the best decision now regardless of what happened in the past.

Thank you for your help! I was able, strangely the day i wrote on the forum, to get resolution with Sleep Country. I had been trying to “fight” with them since weeks. First to get technical infos and then to get a reimbursement instead of an exchange, which I had very little hope for. It finally worked! So, I will have to go back to the drawing board and will happily be able to buy a mattress NOT from them. You would not imagine the mixed information i received from them over the weeks. I honestly do not ever suggest to buy a mattress from this company. And just to finish, for a good laugh, once a person from their customer service answered me; "we do not sell densities, we sell comfort and sleep.":joy:

Good for you!! Lets goooooo!!!
