I have an older too firm Serta mattress that I currently have a 3" Sleep on Latex “soft” Dunlop topper on. It’s better but I’m getting hip and shoulder pain.
I am looking to buy a new mattress, but I need to get some relief NOW while I save up for a new mattress and also want to sort of use this as a test to see what I sleep best on.
I’m in talks with Engineered Sleep who has been great, and we’ve talked about a combo Talalay and memory foam since I am small - 5’3" and 115 lbs with arthritis, degenerative disk disease and other issues so need a lot of pressure point relief.
So I am looking to buy a memory foam topper or Talalay and see if that makes a difference. If I end up with Talalay I was going to go with 100% natural Talalay. Should I go with 19 ILD or 14-16 (extra soft)?
How do I choose between the memory foam or talalay? I’ve been so disappointed with the Dunlop. It’s just not at all soft. I like a little sink/cradling, but not the feeling or being in quicksand. If I start with memory foam would the density make a difference - I was thinking 4?
If I go first with the memory foam, is Certi-PUR certification sufficient to be as “safe” as memory foam can be?
I’ve found some good sources on this site for Talalay toppers. Do you have any for certified Memory Foam Toppers?
Check out ViscoSoft in Charlotte, NC.
Thank you!
I will do that. Do you have any thoughts on trying Talalay vs memory foam first?
Can I ask you why? I’m worried even the Talalay will be too “bouncy” and not give me the “cradling” feeling I am seeking.
Hi macdebbie.
I’m coming into this convo a little late, but you’re right that latex doesn’t create as deep of a sinking feeling as memory foam. Memory foam cells collapse as your body heat gets trapped beneath you as the night progresses, whereas latex cells don’t really have that reaction.
First, let me tell you, it’s OKAY if you prefer memory foam! Dunlop is a little more “dense” and pushes back more than Talalay, but you may still find that you prefer memory foam over Talalay. I’d try to test in person if possible to see if you can place a memory foam topper on an existing Dunlop bed to see if it provides something similar to what you’re looking for - or purchase both toppers from somewhere with a good return policy.
Certi-PUR has a high standard. I’d feel pleased/safe with a memory foam product holding this certification.
I’d check out GhostBed - if I’m not mistaken they’re currently our only Trusted Members who sell Memory Foam toppers.

Thank you so much! Yes, I’d love to try both a memory foam AND a Talalay latex topper in person, but I live in a very small metro (Charleston, SC) and all that are here are “big box” bed stores that don’t carry toppers. Unfortunately, I haven’t found anyplace (yet - I am still going through the member sites) that has a return policy on toppers.
I’d be putting the topper on our existing Serta pillow top bed, but you raise an interesting point - should I try the new topper on top of the existing Dunlop topper, or is that going to create a misalignment problem with too much (6" of latex) on top of the innerspring mattress?
