Hey everyone, a few of you have asked for an update on my Perfectly Snug Smart Topper, so here it is!
I placed the topper on my mattress this past Sunday. It arrived in a long, narrow box—not rolled or compressed like a typical mattress or topper, so setup was easier. I simply un-tri-folded it and laid it mesh side up on top of my existing 3" organic wool topper. I was a bit lazy and decided to leave the wool topper on the mattress.
I tried downloading the app and setting it up before scanning the QR code on the topper, but that was a mistake. I had to uninstall and reinstall the app, then actually follow the instructions. Once I did that, everything connected flawlessly to Wi-Fi, and I was able to label each side of the topper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake while setting the sides—there’s an option in the app to swap them electronically.
Cooling and Heating:
If you’re expecting a traditional electric blanket, this topper works a bit differently. It uses a combination of fans located at the foot of the topper and sensors throughout, with air escape holes built in. The control system divides the topper into three zones: Upper, Middle, and Lower third, which are customizable for each sleeper. The remote allows you to adjust the temperature in each section from a cooling range of -1 to -10, and a heating range of +1 to +10, or you can set it to zero or flip the off switch if you dont want it to turn on.
The app could definitely be improved. I am not quite sure how yet, but it doesn’t seem as modern as an app probably could be. After three days, I feel it’s a bit clunky, but I won’t dwell on that just yet. The main function lets you set the temperatures for each section and schedule when they should turn on and off. You can pick two sets of times per day (for example, Monday through Friday, and then Saturday/Sunday). I’ve set mine for Monday to Friday and again for Saturday/Sunday, but more flexibility in scheduling would be great.
The topper features buttons on each side of the king-size unit, so you can manually control either side independently, an on/off switch, a heat button, and a cooling button. When you hold the cooling button for five seconds, you get a burst of air that’s pretty powerful for however long you’ve set it. For heat, it takes about 15 seconds to warm up, but it feels subtle, more like the warmth of a heated towel from a towel rack rather than a rapid heat surge. While lying on the topper, the heat gradually increases, but when you leave the bed and return, the heat is noticeable right away. There is a small speaker that will also tell you what setting it is on so you don’t have to look at anything.
Personal Experience:
The temperature separation between the two sides works well. My wife was initially annoyed by my experimenting with the settings—first she was too hot, then too cold, she is not too tolerant of new gadgets and me trying to figure them out. So she just asked me to turn it off. I’m sure come summer, she’ll be asking for the cooling. The first night, she didn’t like the mesh cover’s feel. It’s designed for airflow, and while I didn’t mind it, she could feel the mesh texture through the fitted sheet, which bothered her. By the second night, she didn’t mention it at all. She did note that the topper felt firmer than the wool topper, but that didn’t seem to bother her either after the second night either. I cant wait for the summer, when she is hot and begs me to turn the cooling on, LOL. The cooling feels much like the cooling of the seats in my car. You hit the cooling button and the air starts to flow and you have a distinct cooling feel right away. Not like an electric air conditioner, but a cooling much like a fan dedicated to your body under the blanket.
The topper includes straps to keep it in place, though I didn’t need to use them. My DreamFit sheets are snug enough that they hold everything in place, and the topper stays put without any movement. That is the beauty of the DreamFit sheets, they fit so snug on the mattress, everything stays where it is supposed to. It’s a bit strange that the buttons are covered by the sheet, but I’m not sure how else it could be designed. You just need to feel around on the side of the topper about where your shoulder level would be, and it is easy to feel the upper and lower button for heat and cooling, and the switch to turn each side of the mattress on or off is unmistakable. It really is an alternative to looking for your phone and turning on the app in the middle of the night. The cord and power brick are about the size of a laptop charger, and they connect to the head area of the mattress, feeding under the fitted sheet to the floor and then to the outlet.
Final Thoughts:
All in all, I’m happy and impressed with the Perfectly Snug topper. It’s not something I personally need for climate control in the bed—I’m comfortable with my wool topper and duvet—but it’s a great option for anyone who has trouble with temperature regulation while sleeping. I was hoping my wife would like the foot-warming feature, since she sometimes complains her feet are cold, but that might take some time as she is “warming up” to the idea of having the topper on the mattress to begin with. She hated the 3" wool topper when I first put it on, now she loves it.
I’m actually glad I got the topper. It was definitely worth to experience it in real time. It allows me to offer a first-hand experience and make a personalized recommendation to people who struggle with temperature regulation in their bed at night. This is something that the Perfectly Snug Topper does. I cant speak for other bed climate control devices, but this one works quite nicely, occupies a minimal area, as it is only about 2" thick. It does seem to initially give a firm feel, but strangely offers some pressure relief. I do notice a bit of my body impression on the topper, but I am 6’ 220. Keep in mind, I am using a Plank Luxe, one of the firmest mattresses out there, so it is not as pressure relieving as some other mattresses with a less firm comfort layer.
Feel free to reach out with any questions, and I’ll keep you updated as the weather changes!
