The Pocket Coil Store DIY 14.75 vs 15.5 Gauge Coils

TLDR: Trying to decide between TPC 14.75g and 15.5g coils.

My wife and I bought a Split King Naturepedic EOS- she got the Soft Coils, and I have the Firm Coils. I believe they are 13.75g and 15.5g respectively, but I’m not sure, and may also compare differently to other coils of the same gauge. She is happy with her setup, but I find mine too firm, and would prefer something in the middle. After trying out various top layers to try to get the right comfort, I’ve been debating swapping out the Coils for a twin XL at The Pocket Coil Store (Texas Pocket Coil). I want something in between our firm and soft coils, which has led me to lean towards the TPC 14.75g. Has anyone had experience with these? Seems the vast majority of people get the 15.5g. For reference, I am 5’10" 190lbs (27 BMI) and a combination sleeper. Typically sleep back or stomach and move to side if that doesn’t work. I reached out to TPC and he suggested 15.5g, but I just don’t want something quite as soft as my wife’s side. I currently just have the Naturepedic 3" Medium Latex on top of the coils. I’ve also tried the DIYMattress Combi-Zoned Pocket Coil Springs but didn’t like the zoning, so my wife is about ready for me to be done with ordering non-returnable mattress components that don’t pan out. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Hi cschilling,

We offer the EOS and our information indicates the Naturepedic EOS coils are Firm 14.5 and Plush 15.5.

As you mentioned how various coils can feel different and also see in this article on TMU, “All innersprings can be made less or more firm through the use of thicker gauge wire, a greater number of coils, a larger number of “turns” in each coil, tempering, type of steel used, different construction methods, coil shape, coil height, and different Insulator Layers that are placed on top of them.” Additionally, whether the coils are pocketed or hand-tied can affect the firmness. So, as you probably know, there are many factors to consider and questions to ask of TPC.

Are you still within the 100-day period with your EOS? If so, would swapping out the latex for something softer feel better to you while still giving you the support you need?
Alternatively, perhaps you could get a topper for the top of the bed for cushioning.

I hope this helps! Best wishes as you work on the right sleep setup for you. Let us know if we can help.
