These beds? Please help me decide. Your insight is greatly appreciated

Hello. Weve done some research here over the last few days as well as some in person mattress testing yesterday at three stores. We know what we are looking for in terms of type of mattress and think we have our favorites narrowed down.

Context my husband and I are each 5’6 and weigh btwn 150-160 lbs. we are mostly side sleepers with me occasionally sleeping on my stomach and him occasionally on his back. We like btwn medium and firm, no pillow top if we can as we dont like that sinking down feeling. In is okay to a point. Down is not preferred. We prefer traditional vs hybrid or pure foam.

We tested many beds over the hours yesterday and these are our favorites:

  • Kingsdown Northwood Firm
  • Beautyrest Black® C-Class 13.75" Firm Mattress

There was also a Jeromes handmaid mattress we liked, but with other factors such as sleep trials, delivery costs and returns, we eliminated Jeromes since those services could not compete with the two mattresses above.

The wperson at one of three stores also suggested a Beautyrest Black® L-Class 13.75" Firm Mattress, but did not have any instore for us to try. So thats more of a gamble.

Is there anything about these mattresses that I am overlooking or not seeing? Something I should be looking out for? Pros/cons of these beds?

The kingsdown is about 16-1700. The C class is total out the door about 2900 (tax delivery etc etc. we got a quote) and the L class will be about 2200 out the door. Ive never spent more than a $1000 on a mattress so it feels like a lot. Any help or insight is appreciated. Thank you kindly.

Dont choose based on price. Check your spinal alignment with both. Lay on them both for several trials and a winner will emerge. You will choose the winner.

Id check out Aireloom Preferred Luxetop M1/M2 in firm/plush (4 mattresses). I like M1 Firm myself.

Hey CDH and welcome to the MattressUnderGround.

When considering a mattress, it’s crucial to take into account your PPPs (pressure relief, posture and alignment, and personal preferences). Immersing yourself in tutorials to understand the design and construction characteristics can offer valuable insights before committing to a purchase.

Before delving into budget considerations, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the mattress’s features, irrespective of its price. While budget is a factor, mattresses with equal prices may vary significantly in their internal composition and construction.

Having tested mattresses from both companies mentioned in my travels, I refrained from purchasing either. However, Kingsdown’s Prime Series, despite its budget-friendly pricing, distinguished itself from their other mattress series by deviating from the standard perimeter foam-encased edge support around spring coil units to an edge-to-edge coil design.

Both BeautyRest and Kingsdown employ a similar construction style. I recommend watching informative videos on mattress construction and edge support, such as Foam Encased Edge Support and Different Edge Support Reviews.

The key to a restful night’s sleep lies in a mattress that consistently meets your criteria, night after night, year after year. The longevity of a mattress often depends on its weakest layer, emphasizing the need to review final choices side by side, layer by layer, on a computer screen before making a purchase.

Understanding the purpose of elements like micro coils is vital. They should be strategically placed to enhance pressure relief and contouring while promoting airflow, creating a cooler sleep environment. Quality mattresses often replace heat-retaining memory foam with well-designed micro coils.

After gaining a better understanding of mattress construction through videos, you can weigh the pros and cons of your current options. Whether you visited a chain store, department store, or an independent showroom, it’s crucial to note that a higher price doesn’t always guarantee a superior mattress.

Considering you’re looking at more traditional style mattresses, take a look at the construction of DLX Classic Hybrid or their Premier Hybrid. While there are many Trusted Members offering great products, DLX Mattress is an independent manufacturer. Examining the transparency of materials, thickness, and densities in their “mattress construction” column provides valuable insights.

In the end, you may still choose one of your current finalists, but offering additional insights aligns with our approach at TMU. Best of luck and good health with your mattress purchase.
