Topper vs hybrid mattress?

Hello,
New to the forum with a question. Like many I’m overwhelmed by the choices of mattress out there. For many years as a student I had an old cheap Serta mattress that became very firm over time as the pillow top deflated, and rather than upgrade it (because we thought we’d want a bigger bed soon) we bought a 3" medium topper from sleep on latex after reading a lot on this forum. This was a fantastic purchase and made the bed almost perfect for us in terms of feel, softness, and heat regulation, but I felt it was just a bit too firm, and the old mattress underneath sags a bit into the center.

When we moved to a new place, I moved that mattress into the guest room and bought a 9" medium latex mattress from sleep on latex - thinking it would be the same as our topper just better. Sadly, I’m finding this mattress far too hard - it doesn’t have any bounce, leaves my back sore in the morning, and also I think sags a bit between our bedframe slats (which are 4" apart). My husband thinks it sleeps hotter than our old mattress with topper, too. What I do like about it is the lack of motion transfer, as my husband tosses and turns a lot in his sleep.

My question is whether I should buy some sort of firm innerspring mattress (suggestions on a simple decent one?) and just cover it with another 3" topper (suggestions on one similar to the 3" sleep on latex one just slightly softer?), or whether I should look for some sort of hybrid mattress that will work with our 4" slats and give a similar feel to an innerspring with a latex topper. I’m looking to spend not more than about $1200. Thanks so much for any suggestions or help you might offer!

Hello Mary

Thank you for your inquiry.

I have a couple of questions concerning your new(er) latex mattress: Is the cover made with a zipper? And is the latex inside seamed into one piece, or are they individual layers? And finally, do you know the density of your latex foam? If your mattress cover opens, and your latex is layered, you can replace one or more of the firmer layers for softer layers. This will definitely change the overall surface density to a more plush feel.

You also may want to look into purchasing a pocketed coil mattress. If you prefer the feel of a latex topper on a spring mattress, then a pocketed coil mattress maybe the way to go. Pocketed coils are just that, individually pocketed springs, which are not attached to one another like you get in a standard innerspring mattress. This not only eliminates motion transfer, but also contours nicely to your body, similar to that of latex foam. These coil mattresses will still offer you that springy feel under your topper.

I will await your reply about your latex mattress, and offer some feedback as to what can be done. Thanks again, I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi sleep EZ,
Thanks for your reply. The mattress does zip open and has a few layers but I’m unhappy enough with the ‘dull’ feeling of the mattress and that I think I can feel my bed support slats through the mattress that I’m not sure it’s worth trying to save it (is also returnable so we were just planning on that unfortunately). I don’t know the density of the foam but it’s the medium 9" mattress from sleep on latex.
Any suggestions on an affordable pocket coil mattress and latex topper or combo hybrid that achieves the same effect?

Hello Mary

Mattress firm offers pocketed coil mattresses at decent pricing, which you can find here: http://www.mattressfirm.com/mattresses/pocketed-coil/?pmax=999&pmin=599.
They allow you to choose from a few overall firmnesses.

A standard 3" soft or medium latex topper on top of a medium to firm pocketed coil mattress will give you that plush feel over a springy base. If you prefer a very plush feel, I would recommend a soft 19-22ILD 3" topper. If you prefer a plush feel with a bit more support, I would recommend a medium 28-32ILD 3" topper.

Thanks again for your inquiry. Good luck!
