Trying to make the right choice

my boyfriend is 130lbs. He is primarily a side/back sleepers. Mostly back. We are just looking for some help on picking out a mattress that would work for us? We’re looking for something that won’t be too hot, gives support to those sleeping positions, and gives pressure relief. It’ll be a king sized bed to make room for our pets. Our number 1 problem right now with mattresses is finding something that doesn’t destroy my boyfriend’s shoulders. We’re unsure if that means softer or firmer.

Thank you!

Hi Tootired1,

Welcome to the community.

For your situation, choosing a mattress that offers both support and pressure relief is essential. We at the Mattress UnderGround call it the PPP’s. Personal Preferences, Posture and Alignment, and Pressure Relief.

Since your boyfriend weighs 130lbs and sleeps primarily on his back, with some side sleeping, you’ll want a mattress that balances comfort with enough firmness to support his spine. A medium-firm mattress would likely be the best fit, as it would provide the necessary support for his back while also offering enough cushioning for his shoulders when he sleeps on his side. A mattress that is very firm may exacerbate shoulder pain by not allowing enough sinkage, when sleeping on his side (but the right pillow is a key component here) whereas a mattress that’s too soft might not provide enough support for the spine when sleeping on the back.

In terms of pressure relief, it’s crucial to select a mattress that can contour to the body to relieve pressure points, particularly around the shoulders and hips. Latex or hybrid mattresses, which combine latex layers with coils, are often great for this because they offer the cushioning and conforming qualities of foam while still providing support with the coil system. Memory foam is also good in this situation, but most memory foam mattresses will sleep warm, whereas something like a Tempflow with memory foam that has unique airflow channels would be what you want to look of if a memory foam construction. A mattress with a cooling layer is also important to prevent overheating, especially if you share the bed with pets. Look for a mattress that incorporate breathable covers, or open-cell foam to promote airflow and reduce heat retention, natural fibers are generally best, but the overall construction and engineering is crucial. With pets, be certain to use a quality mattress protector, one that breathes but offers appropriate protection.

Durability is another consideration, especially with pets in the bed. Hybrid mattresses with foam layers and coils tend to offer excellent motion isolation, so movements from your boyfriend or the pets won’t disturb each other’s sleep. It’s also essential to find a mattress that is built to last, offering support over time without sagging, which is especially important for someone with a lighter weight like your boyfriend. Testing mattresses in-store will offer a chance to determine if a mattress is too soft. While selecting one with a generous trial period that you may order online, carefully reviewing the specs and collaborating with those brands mattress experts will help you find the right balance of firmness, comfort, pressure relief, and temperature regulation.

Some key points to remember.

  • Memory Foam Density and Heat Retention: High-density memory foam, like 5lb foam, offers excellent pressure relief and body contouring, but it tends to trap heat, creating a sauna-like environment. Whether the foam is made firm or soft, the heat retention can be problematic. It’s important to keep this in mind if you’re considering memory foam, as it might not be the best choice for those sensitive to heat, unless other cooling measures are in place.
  • Cooling Channels and Airflow: When considering foam mattresses, look for ones that incorporate air channels or ventilation systems designed to dissipate heat and improve airflow. These channels allow air to circulate through the mattress, helping to prevent heat buildup and regulate temperature. Another great option is a mattress with microcoils in the comfort layer. These tiny coils encourage airflow, making the mattress more breathable and helping heat escape. By focusing on features like microcoils, natural fibers, and natural latex, you can create a mattress that not only provides superior cooling and airflow but also supports a comfortable and pressure-relieving sleep experience. These features work together to ensure a cooler, more breathable, and comfortable sleeping environment, without relying on the often overstated effectiveness of gel or mineral-infused foams.
  • Microcoil Comfort Layers: Mattresses with microcoils offer excellent breathability and help to disperse heat more effectively than foam alone. These coils improve airflow within the mattress, allowing for better heat dissipation and maintaining a cooler surface while still providing support. Microcoils are a great alternative to traditional foam when you’re seeking a cooler, more breathable sleep experience.
  • Natural Fibers for Breathability: Consider mattresses made with natural fibers like wool, cotton, horsehair, or natural latex. These materials are not only breathable but also moisture-wicking, making them excellent for temperature regulation. Wool helps to naturally regulate body temperature, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, while cotton and horsehair allow for better airflow, preventing heat from building up. Natural latex is also a great option for its breathability and supportive qualities, without sacrificing cooling.
  • Pressure Relief vs. Firmness: While memory foam provides great pressure relief, it can sometimes feel too soft for those who need more support. A mattress combining medium-firm support with breathable materials like natural latex, microcoils, and natural fibers can provide the right balance of comfort, pressure relief, and cooling. This hybrid design helps prevent excessive sinkage while keeping the temperature regulated naturally through its breathable and moisture-wicking components.

Hopefully, this gives you a head start.
