Hello all! I think I’ve determined that all latex is the mattress for me, but I am getting the impression that it might not be right for my husband. He is 6’1", 280 lbs and some sites–like Spindle–flat-out say “this might not be right for you” when I plug in those stats.
If I go with two Twin XLs to put in on our King platform, I’d like to go with the same company so we get them at the same time. Anyone want to throw out a guess as to where I should look? I feel like my need for total motion isolation and a wet sand feel to the mattress (and good temp regulation) suggests I’ll be happy with latex. And husband’s size suggests hybrid? Is it that a heavy dude needs coils?
I’ve been reading a ton on here, so I’d love any folks who’ve faced similar concerns to weigh in.

Higher BMI ranges will need more durable materials and components in a mattress. When also considering personal preferences and the support needs of the varying sleeping positions, it can be a challenge to find the perfect fit. Speaking with experts like Sleep EZ/LMF is a great way to not only learn more, but to be guided in the right direction towards something durable, properly supportive, and - of course - comfortable.

Memory foam is the most popular material for giving the “wet sand” feel and is also popular for motion isolation, but latex and innersprings in the support core are a great option for that as well and latex - as you mentioned - is preferred for temperature regulation as it sleeps cooler than all other foams. And, with a split mattress, you’re going to be less likely to transfer motion across the layers anyway.

Thanks so much for that super-efficient tidy! I didn’t realize the two companies were related.
It had been my experience with more recent memory foam buys–mattresses for my kids–that newer memory foams didn’t have that wet sand feel that my Tempurpedic had. Of course, I also didn’t yet know about this site, so I had no idea about the vast range of products under “memory foam.” I’m open to pretty much any material that will make me happy with my mattress–latex, foam, potato peels, whatever.
I very much appreciated Spindle’s willingness to say latex might not work for my husband’s size, I agree that it speaks well of them. I just need to figure out how to build something (or, preferably have built) that will work for us.
I feel like I’ve reached that point in research where I know enough to know what I don’t know and it’s pretty overwhelming, so thanks to all inclined to help out.

Yes! It’s surprising how foams can vary in feel based on the “blend” of components, foam density, etc. A potato peel mattress sounds pretty exciting. There ARE mattresses out there made of more peculiar components (as you’ve likely discovered). Someday, I’d like to lay.on some of those more unique mattresses to see what they feel like.
