What mattress from these brands would you buy?

I am looking at beds, but am limited to a store due to a credit I have and have no clue what to go with. The store only carries Purple, Tempur, Nectar, S&F, and Sealy, and can get virtually any model from all. I can spend up to $2500 on the mattress.

2 sleepers, both between 195 and 225 pounds. Both overheat at night and wake up snore. One is primarily a side sleeper, the other a side and stomach sleeper. As far as mattresses go, I think we are primarily looking for a Hybrid.

All that said, what would you pick from these brands?

Hi CptDiabeetus,

Welcome to the Mattress UnderGround. I am sorry to hear that your credit is limited to one particular store with the specific selection available. Since you did not mention it, I will assume a king sized mattress so the price can only drop from that point.

The S&F Estate Firm or the Sealy Posturepedic Plus Hybrid or perhaps if you can swing it the Sealy Naturals Hybrid Firm.

All of these mattresses are made by Tempur/Sealy. So you are not getting much choice, but setting aside the guidelines for purchasing a mattress these would be the 3 best choices in your price right or just above. All have edge to edge coils with enhanced edge support. The Sealy and S&F employ memory foam (not the naturals) in their construction, which place you at a disadvantage as the memory foam has the potential to cause you to sink. By coincidence, this just showed up on reddit. The fact that they bought at costco is of no real consequence, the basic construction of the S&F is the same, utilizing that memory foam in the comfort layer. This would not necessarily be a deal breaker, but the thing about the S brands is they do not offer you the specs on their foams, materials and springs.
So you have no way of knowing what you are buying.

That said, if you could swing the Natural mattress and test it to see if you like the buoyant feel of latex, it may be the best choice in the bunch. Both the Sealy and S&F will offer you very similar experiences, perhaps with S&F gaining on their legacy reputation for moral support.

I would almost consider utilizing a quality topper on the non natural versions as a vehicle to add longevity to the mattress as the topper will be the first source of impact of your bodies. Much more economical to replace the topper than the mattress.

Purple, Tempur and Nectar would likely be best left in the store. Although they sell a lot of mattresses, the internet independent reviews you may not find glowing with praise. One the positive side, the Sealy and S&F are made in the US, so you are likely to have more consistency in production.

As I mentioned, this is based on the hand you were dealt here. Hopefully, you find one that will serve you well.

Thank you for the reply! I am actually looking at Queens if that changes anything. That said, I was honestly expecting to be told to only look at Tempur with how much hate the others get, especially Sealy!

If I could get a SF Lux Hybrid or Reserve on clearance for close to $2500, should I? Is the reserve worth paying a little more if needed?

I believe the Sealy Naturals offers great potential due to its natural latex construction. If you’re a fan of Tempur, consider Tempflow. They remain true to their original design by continuing to use high-density memory foam, ensuring the same quality you expect.

When evaluating the S brands, it’s important to proceed with caution since they don’t fully disclose the materials used (which always makes you want to investigate even more.) Although their production processes are advanced and aim to produce durable mattresses, the concern arises with the types of foams they use. The growing inclusion of memory foam in nearly all models raises questions about their long-term durability.

My perspective is not to hate anything, but to look at the components, quality of foams, and contruction. In 1986 I bought a Serta Perfect Sleeper ultra firm flippable mattress. Finally tossed it in 2011, mainly because I got remarried. In 2011, I bought a Sealy Posturepedic Ultra Firm Pillowtop $5k+, it lasted to 2021ish, but it was fading in the last few years and could not be saved. It was hard to go there again as all the the S’s regardless of price, BR and S&F were in the 5-7k+ range for their “top” mattresses. My $1400 BB Plank Luxe is going to outlast all of them. Plus, I got the firmness I wanted.

It is all a matter of perspective and due diligence. If you want a comfortable mattress for a few years, the fancy S’s will do the trick, but generally at a backward price to value ratio. You are getting more foam for the money, not better quality. More lower quality foam, just means a thicker lower quality mattress. More to break down. Are they better than the Nectar’s, Dreamcloud’s and Caspers of the world, ok, sure. But you will do much better with a DLX mattress or something like that, where the manufacturer does not cut quality for shareholder prioritization.

Just my perspective on it all.

With the reserve, you have to go to a pillowtop to get what they consider a firm. The lux hybrid offers a S,M, or F in their conventional option and does not offer a PT.

The reserve is supposed to be their best of the best. I always make the statement, “the best is only the best, if it works for you” if it does, that is the best value.

I hesitate on the reserve just because of how tall they are. That’s a lot of foam on top of the coils, leading to many point of failure and opportunity to sag in the future. That said, in my mattress shopping experience I have found many of the most comfortable options for me have latex in the lower layers with other foams, wool etc on top of that. For some reason that mix just really works for me.

The reserve’s use of latex, micro coils and presumably higher quality foams above may be good. I would just worry about the lack of transparency in materials and the excessive height. 16-17 inches is a lot of stuff thrown on 8 inch coils. And it eliminates the ability to add a topper to adjust and limts the bedding choices that you have
