What to use beneath pocket coils for protection

Current setup is 8" TPS 15g + medium tal 3" from LMF. Foam by mail sells cheap HR foam that im thinking of using. Do I really need 1"? 1/2" seems like it would be fine to me. They sell the LUX-r and the LUX-HQ at 1/2". How would that affect the rest of the mattress?

If you are using a platform, you really dont need any. If you are using an adjustable base or slatted, a HD foam of at least a 36ILD should be sufficient at a half inch.

Keep in mind that at one inch it will provide better support for the coils by offering a more substantial base layer. This can help in evenly distributing the weight and pressure, improving the performance and longevity of the coil system. A thicker foam layer can also help in absorbing some of the impact and vibrations from the coils, leading to better overall comfort.

One inch typically results in a more supportive and comfortable base for the coils, improving the mattress’s overall performance and extending its lifespan. A half inch, the coils may seem a bit firmer, the foam might get you a long a lifespan due to it potentially wearing down faster.

These differences may be subtle, but exist none the less.

Hope this helps

What is a typical 1 inch layer ppl use?

I would say a 1" HD 36-50ILD. But many dont use any depending on how they are building their mattress. Even scrim sheets on top of coils, I remember @PCS saying they prefer not to use them as they are really not necessary.
The base layer under the coils will reduce wear and tear on the panel cover and 1" will offer a more balanced ride.

My thought is 1" will be better in the short run and long run.

So the HQ36-HQ foam or the LUX foams from FBM would work?

the HD36 HQ foam in 1" should work fine.

IMO 1” is great if you are putting it in slats, but it’s not necessary. If the gaps are small enough you could be fine with something thinner.

All things equal 1” is nice.

Do you REALLY Need 1"? Would it change the feel that much an inch vs half? I just would like some protection really for the bottom of the coils. They are resting on a flat boarrd atm with a cover sheet. Resting them on 1/2" to 1" foam will only make the bed softer right (though not by much).

Would the HD36 R work?

Yes it would work. 1" will be a bit softer then 1/2 in

IM looking at the two HD36 options from Foam Mattresses | Foam Factory, Inc.
The HQ and the R. The main difference appears to be the density. Otherwise mostly same stats. DOes that mean they are func equivalent with just more longevity in the HQ option? Or is it more complex than that?

Ill post the response I got from FBM:

You are correct, both foam types are the exact same the only difference is longevity.
The high quality is infused with rubber to have a longer life than the regular foam.
