Wheres all the 16" memory foam beds!? Replacing Lucid Mattress

Hi guys!

Ok, so to start off with I’m 6’ 330lbs. I prefer a soft mattress as I sleep on my back and side. The memory foam cradles my lower back which is fantastic. I know they say a firm mattress is good for fat people but I can’t stand a firm mattress. When I lay on my back on a firm mattress it’s like there’s no support in the cradle of my lower back.

So I purchased a Lucid bed in a box years ago and love it. My problem is it’s a full size and I want to get a queen. Unfortunately Lucid doesn’t make this model anymore.

My current LUCID 16 Inch Plush Gel Memory Foam and Latex Four-Layer-Infused with Bamboo Charcoal Mattress has the following layers:

Tencel Cover
1" bamboo charcoal memory foam
3" ventilated gel memory foam
2" natural latex foam
10" high density base foam

I love the feel of a plush mattress that you sink into, which this one does but I think that latex layer provides just enough support/bounce. It also doesn’t sleep overly hot but I sleep with a fan so I may just not notice it.

The great thing was this mattress only cost like 400 bucks! I really didn’t think I’d be happy with a bed in a box but I really do love it. It’s been over 5 years and it still feels great.

For whatever reason I’m finding it incredibly difficult to find a similar 16" plush memory foam mattress. Most seem to top out at 14". I don’t know how big of a difference 2" would make but I really appreciated the 10" support foam being that I weigh as much as a baby elephant. :stuck_out_tongue:

So basically what I’m looking for is a memory foam/latex mix that is 16". I’d like to steer clear of coils. A natural encasing/cover, especially bamboo would be great. I’d also like to avoid toppers. I like everything to be enclosed.

I’m also considering an all latex model but have no idea how that would compare to memory foam. I live in the boonies and the only place near me is a Mattress Firm which doesn’t have much to try.

Being that I can’t find a memory foam/latex combo anywhere, I was also looking at a complete latex build with four 3 inch layers. Layers from the top would be soft talay, medium talay, firm dunlap, x-firm dunlap. Would that setup have a sinking in feel? Like sleeping in the mattress as opposed to on top? I’d like to keep price at around 2k max if possible, although spending just 400 again would be awesome. Stupid inflation lol

Hello CaptainCookiePuss!

Welcome to our Mattress Forum

Oh dang. This is always the worst when you find a mattress you love and then they stop making it. That happened to me with a model of jeans recently and I’m clinging desperately to the last pair.

That’s a steal. Seriously. Quality beds in this price range are a unicorn.

The fact of the matter is that thicker mattresses in general just aren’t very common/popular. That’s probably why you’re having a hard time finding one taller than 16".

Are you against buying a latex bed and adding the additional 2" memory foam topper yourself? Some people find this to be a great success.

It will feel a bit different, just because the cell structure of latex doesn’t collapse the way the cell structure of memory foam does as it heats up.

I’m also going to tag @Arizona_Premium for thoughts. He’s got great DIY insights and may have more specific suggestions in building a bed yourself.

Latex has a floating feeling, not a sinking feeling. Latex will push back giving support in areas that memory foam can’t.

Thanks for the welcome and reply Nikki! I went to Arizona Mattress and think I can build something I like.

Floating sounds nice, Arizona_Premium! I emailed you guys and am %99 sure I’m going to purchase a latex/foam hybrid from you guys. I couldn’t find anyone else that offered 15" zippered enclosures or a mix of latex and memory foam options.

Seems like my only decision left is to buy now or wait until Black Friday haha

Every day is Black Friday here so waiting won’t be of any benefit with us.
