Why does this retailer act like mafia ? :)

Hi there! I am from Europe - moved to California 4 years ago - so zero knowledge about the brands and market here. Needed to buy 3 mattresses for my new house - primary, kids and guest bedroom. Went to Mancini Sleepword 2 months ago - that is theoretically a local family owned business. And then from the on I feel like I am in a movie with MAFIA!

First I did not feel the representative was trying to help us make the best decision but just coming up with sentences preventing us to be able to make any comparisons between brands. So not sure we got any education.
He suggested Aireloom Pacific Bay ORION Luxury Firm for primary bedroom for 3199 USD + adjustable frame and 2 Kingdsdowns for 1000 USD each for kids and guest bedroom. So overall we spent 6700 USD there + matress protectors. 2 days later they installed the matress on the adjustable frams, installed the matress protectors and left. We were supposed to get 120 days trial - all looked good.

The Aireloom was a complete miss - as its far too firm form my back and does not have any cushion to help my shoulders or hip get any pressure relief. I am a side/back sleeper with lower back/hip issues. I have tried sleeping on it for over a month, waiting for it to break in and had to give up.

We went to another Mancini close to us to see what could be an alternative/better choice for the Aireloom but before the rep wanted to help us he demanded the our phone number and looked up the original order and basically then treated us as if he did not really want to help and mentioned that we just have to call our original salesguy and maybe have him look into BeatyRest Black (B-Class Medium E k). I had some doubts on our original salesguy so did not really want to do it - but the same thing happened when we went to a third Mancini in San Francisco - bascially no advice - just go talk to your original salesguy and maybe have him look into Avocado :).

I then called Mancini to at least get the return process started even if I had no idea what to exchange it for - but then the real issues began. First the guys showed up to pick up the matress and they did not actually want to pick it up as they apparently found a small stain - they were using flashlights and it was the tiniest, faintest stain looking like somebody could have just touched with a finger. Possibly also during installation as we never took the protector off. I had trouble documenting it with my phone to show to my husband what they were talking about.

Then our original guy called - pretty rude on the phone and said that he had to talk to his boss to get return options for us and that since that stain is there - they will only exchange if we pay 10 % of the value and return if we pay 15 % of the value.

Crazy! Am I getting ripped off here? Why do they all like some Mafia guys  is there anything else you would recommend me to do to challenge?

(I am starting another separate post on what mattress should I buy but now just really determined to return the unfortunate Aireloom not to be stuck with the Mancini guys)!

Hey BRIDZID.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum.

Sorry to hear about the aggressive sales tactics and run around you’re getting from these Mancini folks.

We always recommend buying from someone with a pretty open exchange or return policy for these kinds of issues. Often times, companies take a “loss” when a mattress is returned as most places don’t allow for the resale of a “used” mattress even if you never took the wrapping off.

You may be getting ripped off, but if you didn’t inquire about their policies before purchasing you’re just kind of stuck with what they’re willing to do for you.

For future reference, we have this handy mattress shopping tutorial to help you avoid pitfalls like these. You may also find this resource on mattress specifications useful as well.

We look forward to helping you troubleshoot!
