Would a mattress that overhangs bed frame cause long term damage?

Hi everyone,

I’ve got a “Floating” bed frame, where the slats don’t quite reach the end of the mattress. This leaves a 5cm gap around all edges where (so you don’t see the frame).

We checked with the bed manufacturer whether this would ever cause any issues with a mattress. They were confident it wouldn’t (not surprising really, as otherwise why would they sell this bed).

We then bought a new pocket sprung mattress, from Vispring. It’s an investment as it cost us around £1700 ($2250), far more expensive than the bed frame. After speaking with Vispring, they say the lack of support around the edges would cause long term damage. This also invalidates the 30 year warranty.

Does anyone know whether they are correct on this one?
I’m inclined to go with the mattress manufacturer, as it’s the more expensive item, and it does feel like it would cause an issue over time (whenever you get on and off the bed you can kind of feel the mattress sagging a little bit).

Just odd that a bed supplier would sell a bed with this kind of issue (I’ve sent them a complaint about it, but they brushed it off saying they can’t be aware of every mattress suppliers warranty conditions).

Hello leroyjenkins, welcome to the Mattress Underground!

We sell both bed frames and mattresses (including Vispring).
I can tell you that when people have a warranty claim on a mattress, one of the first pieces of information that the mattress makers will insist on is a picture of the support that the mattress is on.
I’m unable to foresee the future, but if you ever have a claim on your mattress, your warranty might be null and void because of not having adequate support.
