Firmness level (finding the perfect mattress)

who? me? I’m 6’0"[/quote]

Yes, like I mentioned I just learned how to quote. It would of made it easier… lol

the support coils have a band of heavier gauge coils around the perimeter so it doesn’t sag when you’re sitting on the bed. because naturepedic makes it so you have split queens and kings, these stiffer coils are only on 3 sides so there isn’t a ridge in the middle of the bed. when you get your mattress and unpack the support coils you’ll see a brown stripe around 3 sides… the brown strip is supposed to mirror the perimeter coil. on one of my sides they had the cover with the strip on backwards. for a while i was just sleeping on one so didn’t feel the ridge. latel y i’ve been moving around and noticed the ridge. made me feel like my mattress had sagged and was bummed. though it might be my box spring. took it all apart, got a new box spring. still had the ridge. finally opened up up the cover and poked holes in the spring covers and realized naturepedic assembled it wron, so for 3 year’s had a ridge in the middle. since i fixed it, it’s been perfect, but i was pissed. insisted that they make my warranty a full 20 years without proration.

That’s horrible, how can one tell about the coils without poking holes, that’s some good info though?

would start by feel. was prob just a random mistake, though based on marshmallows experience combined with mine , maybe there’s some sloppiness going on at naturepedic. but other than than that, cont say enough good about the mattress. for once in my like i love my mattress instead of hating it after 2 years. definitely feels like it could be a 15+ year mattress.

I just went back through our convo, you are using microcoils instead of latex, I may have missed the reason for that? Is that better instead of latex?

Tom,

A couple of other places you may want to look:

If you like firm the Pure Echo at My Green Mattress is a great organic mattress for a great price. I would stay away from their Natural Escape because it is harder in the middle. Neither of us liked it. If there is one your wife wants to try it would be the Kiwi. My friend tried it and then got a plush topper to make it softer. You can get the topper for half price if you wait until you get it then call them back and complain it is too hard.

Happsy is Naturepedics on-line retail offering. It is one size fits all but basically the same product at a reduced price point.

I found Joybed very comfortable but I don’t think it is a quality mattress. I could see it wearing out quite quick. I also didn’t like how they send short mattresses and did not label the contents of the mattresses (twice), flouting US manufacturing laws. So I returned them.

We are working with the Naturepedic product because it is organic and I think it is the last mattress we will ever have to buy. From what I read the coils don’t wear out, it is the foam layers. If we feel the microcoils do then we will just swap those layers. I never want to buy a mattress again.

I had attempted this before (about 15 years ago) with 100% talalay latex mattresses but they developed depressions, eventually wore out and stunk of latex off and on the entire time we owned them.

In terms of my experience last night, we were lazy and did not swap layers, just swapped beds. So I was on the firm coils with two layers of soft microcoils. I swapped back in the middle of the night because my feet were going numb constantly and my back ached. So definately too soft for me.

I think I definately need to have medium coils under me to float my weight. Tonight we may try firm, soft then medium. Not so much because I think that is a good combination but because I am curious to see the effect and I don’t have two layers of medium to try. Also changing out the base coils is going to be very hard on my husband so we are avoiding it. Eventually we will probably have to take on that task.

What surprised me with the Classic is that the plush coils with soft microcoils seems harder than the plush coils with medium microcoils. That is counter intuitive and the only explanation I could think of was I was bottoming out on the soft coils.

Yes there is a height difference. But we will deal with that after we find the perfect two mattresses. Bed leg height can always be adjusted. When we bought our adjustable frames I bought short legs for one and had the other legs cut down at a machine shop. If I need to I can probably buy replacement legs for one or the other and have them cut to the perfect length.

In terms of companies I have dealt with My Green Mattress seemed top notch. No short mattresses from them. They also advertise their lengths at 79" and they deliver it. Delivery was super quick. Days after we had ordered them they were at their destinations. I ordered the Natural Escape for us and the Pure Echo for my mom. If you are in the Chicago area there is a show room to try out the mattresses.

Currently we have not paid to swap layers because we are just swapping them between the two twinXL mattresses. The next step may be getting a second medium microcoils to swap in. I will report back if they charge us for it.

What size mattress are you buying? Do you have adjustable bases? If not I highly recommend them. We like the lucid L100. They are fabulous and not very expensive.
What height and weight are you both?

yes, marsh. allow and I are both microcoil. I started with latex which Iiked in the store ut at home just couldn’t sleep comfortably. hadn’t even considered microcoil but had them send one as a last ditch effort and ended up loving it. I fell like it give a much more responsive support. also sleeps much cooler. I never would have suspected sleeping on a bunch of steel springs would be such a comfortable bed. if you click on my profe same you can get to my past posts where I went more in depth.

Interesting that there was a smell from the latex, I was under the impression for quality mattresses, there shouldn’t be a latex smell.

We are looking at Cal king for mattress and just have a foundation lay out.

I am 5’7 -190 -5’3 - 145

I thought the eos pillow top for your husband was perfect, is there a reason you are changing his layers as well? I never thought buying a mattress was so difficult, but I guess I never knew better and just dealt with what I had or bought.

I hope you find your best fit, I know it can be nerve racking, but you will get it right. Is both mattresses within the 90 days?

Yes, I was browsing your past posts, I never thought about sleeping on micro coils.
Do they have a layer on top of the coils?
I am glad it worked out for you.

Hi Tom,

My husband is happy with his but I need to use the pillow top to experiment for myself. If I can find one I’m thrilled with one of us will keep the pillow top in the perfect configuration and we will order another pillow top in the other perfect configuration.

It may be that the Classic with the plush base coils and the medium microcoils is the best I can do. If so then I will look at adding something like a wool topper.

Is the micro coils 3" since that is the layer of latex as well?

I need to see this thing in person.

Every time I log into mattress underground the more I am confused. Lol

They have some pictures that show the mattress configuration here:

It is under the “latex free” page. I suggest using cotton gloves if you buy one to zip the mattress. The metal zipper is heavy duty and sharp.

I think @deuxcv will be insulted because he has a fetish for the zippers so I wouldn’t dare do that. Lol

I just realized the microcoil setup is cheaper too?

yes, the microcoils are interchangeable with the latex. for the comfort layer in the classic you get 3" of latex or 3" of microcoils. in the pillowtop you get 2 comfort layers, either latex or microcoils.

on top of either of them is just the outer casing which is a heavy quilted sandwich of cotton, pla batting and wool. bit less than an inch thick.

where in the country are you? if you can make a trip to a store and play with the layers it will all make sense and help narrow the choices. i would never want to buy a mattress solely online, you need to see what you like. then if needs tweaking do a swap.

that zipper… that’s what sold me. it’s such a satisfying zipper. heavy gauge. solid brass. i looked at lots of mattresses with interchangeable insides and not a single one came close to the fit and finish and build quality of naturepedic.

and,no, the price is the same between the latex and the microcoils.

I’m in California. I never thought getting a mattress was so much effort but it is. I’ll never look at a mattress the same.

Do you think the zipper is sharp as marshmallow mentioned, or they cheated her of the experience that you got?

I clicked the link marshmallow sent and then switched to latex and the prices changed. I’ll check it on a computer so it’s easier to see.

I second getting to a show room to see and try them in person. They are expensive! You want to be sure that you will like what you are getting.

In terms of my experience last night with firm base coils, soft microcoils (in the middle) and medium microcoils on top, it wasn’t bad. I was able to stay on it all night. But I feel the soft microcoils are wrong for me. I just fall through them.

My husband, on the other hand, said his plush base coils with soft microcoils was OK but he missed the feeling of falling through the layers that two sets of soft microcoils provides him.

I am going to get another medium microcoil to try two sets of medium together. That way I can give my husband back the soft and we will just put it under the bedbeg cover and mattress pad until we sort out our final configuration.

I will try both the plush base layer and the firm base layer with two levels of medium microcoils.

Looking at your weights and sleeping preferences I think you might like plush with medium microcoils for your wife and maybe firm with medium microcoils for you.

I also have a bad back and bad hips so need the support. My husband has neither and has never met a mattress that is too soft for him.

well, living in california, you’re in luck. there are 4 naturepedic owned stores between irvine and the bay area, and a few independent 3rd part sellers. company sales vs independent store sales can have different rules and costs for after sale layer swaps, so if you think you’re gonna do more than one layer sway, i’d buy from naturepedic, not an independent. that said, my business ethos would thereby tell me not to waste the time and resources of an independent store and only go to a naturepedic store. either way… you have options. and if you’re tempted at the store (even a company store) to order then and there, make sure the store has the same rules as online.

as for price… i clicked on that link too and maybe see what you saw, but what i saw was clearly a glitch depending if you were looking at the button or the summary, and either way, when you added it to the cart, it was the price i expected… the same as latex.

as for the zipper… well, it’s a zipper. a big burly metal zipper. so yeah, it’s rough and your wrestling a bunch of stuff closing it up. so depending on your strength, dexterity and furniture in the way, i can see it being a beast for some to put together. but as we know, i have a fascination with zippers and i’m appreciative of its heft and ability to hold all the stuff together. once it’s closed up there’s nothing to worry about. i personally wouldn’t have though to call it sharp, but i can understand marshmallow’s thought there.

I recommend working with a store. We were able to get free sheets, free pillow and free mattress protector with our first purchase and 10% off the second mattress. They will also discount if you want to buy a swap layer beyond the initial 90 days.

You do have to check on their exchange policy. Our store was initially $80 for shipping both ways but then I think it changed to free but I’m not sure on that. I will soon find out though. They did say you would have to pay for them to pick it up if you returned it but you could donate it for free (which is what we did with the too short mattress). Out local rescue mission comes to the house to get them for free and you just need a picture of it on the truck and the donation receipt. We did this for three types of mattresses and it was seamless in terms of getting our money back. Not so easy when setting up and then removing heavy mattresses and storing them while we waited for pick up. But the alternative of getting stuck with a mattress that doesn’t work for you is worse so I shouldn’t knock it.

In terms of the zipper, yes it is fine when closed. I’m talking about zipping it up and sticking your hand in between the teeth to tuck the comfort layers in so they don’t get caught. It is sharp for this process. Using some simple cotton gloves to protect your hands makes it easy and less of an accident waiting to happen. If you get blood on the mattress you can’t return it. We also have encased each of our mattresses in a bed bug cover (waterproof) to protect them so that we could return them without any damage as that is required for all the company’s return policies.

Regarding the exchange policy. They charge you the full amount for a new layer and then credit it back when you return a layer. So for a twinXL layer they are charging me $475.
